This was an evening with a group of students from Hayfield School, studying for a GCSE in Astronomy, doing a field exercise at Austerfield, sketching and photographing the moon.
Their leader Jane Walls must have a better relationship with the Cloud God than our three broomstick riders, as he kept his clouds away all evening.
Our team was Dave and Lesley, Paul and Elaine, Mark, Rhys, Vic, Sandra and Peter. There seemed to be hundreds of them, but in all there were 20 students, and their teacher, with two other teachers. The Head of Science and a Deputy Head dropped it too for a while, but in the dark it was difficult to tell them all apart from the students.
We certainly enjoyed the evening and the students also seemed to. There was none of the larking about that we'd expected, all were serious in their intent to use the time productively. They can come again, anytime.
